I recently went to see Chipwrecked at the cinema with my 3 year old Grandson. The star of the movie is a little chipmunk with the name of Alvin. You may have heard of him, Alvin and the Chipmunks. My little fella seemed to enjoy the movie. I fell asleep for 10 minutes in the middle of it. 5 minutes into the film my Grandson said he was hungry which is his way of saying he wanted some sweets. I reluctantly offered him some of my popcorn. Fortunately the little fella doesn't like popcorn but he does like little biscuits and my wife had a packet in her handbag. As we left the cinema he started complaining again of being hungry so as a special treat we stopped off at a McDonalds Drive Thru on the way home. My wife ordered him a chicken nuggets Happy Meal and a fruit pack. We let the little fella have the meal to eat as we drove home.
"Granddad, I don't like chicken nuggets, I wanted a burger!"
"Oh sorry little fella but never mind eat your nuggets" I replied. At which point he started to get upset. Looking anxiously at my wife I suggested that she should dip into the Happy Meal and pull out the free toy that always comes inside the box.
"Would you like the toy to play with?" I said hoping to calm him down. "Toy!" he said; "What toy?"
"The toy you got from McDonalds" I replied. My wife passed him the packet.
He ripped open the plastic bag. "Is this a toy Granddad?"
Trying to drive and look at the little fella through my drivers mirror was proving difficult. "Yes it's a toy."
My wife looked at me as the little fella threw the toy down. "It isn't a toy actually" she said "It's a cup with a lid that looks like an orange juice squeezer."
"What! No toy!" he cried out.
"Never mind young man this is even better than a toy. When we get home we can make you your very own freshly squeezed orange juice. Just think how much fun that will be."
The little fella quietened down and I could see that the cogs in that tiny little mind of his were turning round and round as we drove down the street. We eventually returned home. After about half an hour the little fella came up to me and started to pull me out of my chair. "Granddad, I want some orange juice." For a moment I had visions of the little fella bursting into tears as I told him that we didn't have any oranges. Fortunately my good wife came to the rescue with the news that she had bought a dozen oranges from the supermarket the previous day.
We shot off into the kitchen, washed the plastic cup and squeezer and cut up two oranges into 4 halves. The lid went on the cup and then I showed the little fella how to turn the orange and how to press down at the same time. It worked a treat and we both smiled as we watched the plastic cup slowly filling up with the freshly squeezed juice. The little fella put the cup to his mouth and tasted the orange juice.
"What do you think to it?" I asked.
"I don't like the bits in it" he replied.
"No problems" I replied as I rushed to the cupboard where we kept a little mesh sieve. I then poured the juice through the sieve before returning it to the plastic cup.
The little fella finished his drink and then we went through the whole routine a second time. He loved the juice and he loved the thought of making the drink for himself from the beautiful oranges. He stayed with us that night and then for breakfast the next day we went through the routine again. After we had exhausted our supply of oranges we drove him home and returned him to his Mum and Dad.
"Mum" he said, "look what Granddad got me. Have you any oranges?"
Now avid reader you are probably wondering where this story is going and I have to confess I have absolutely no idea. But the strange thing about all of this is that a few days after this event I received a delivery of a consignment of pottery that I had ordered from the Polish manufacturer way back in December 2011. When I unpacked the order I was shocked to find a product that I had completely forgotten that I had ordered. The product was one that I had never stocked before but which back in December I thought looked interesting and so I had ordered half a dozen just to try it out. And ..... guess what it was? A jug with fruit juice squeezer. Here is a photo of the product and it is available for sale from our on-line shop for £10.99.
